Well,we are going to show everyone how to upgrade their device Operating System (OS).
Firstly, we’d like to tell everyone this because its VERY important, To obtain the latest and harmless Operating System for your BlackBerry device, you should either use step 1 or 2 from this post, because If you decide to download and install an unofficial version of the BlackBerry OS, you should know that you’re doing so at your own risk. Beta operating systems are not officially released for good reasons: They’re often full of bugs and could potentially void your warranty or worse, render your BlackBerry unusable. (That’s why Blackberry’s crash or develop most of the common problems we all know today).
Here are the 3 major ways to upgrade your Blackberry OS:
1) On the web
2) From your device (over the air)
3) Locally from a Desktop manager
1) On the web:
Requirements: a PC (that must be connected to the internet), a Blackberry USB cable.
Simply go http://www.blackberry.com, choose your country, and then proceed to the next page, under the “software” tab click ‘update software’, then scroll down to where you’ll see ‘Update on the web’, connect the device you want to update, input your password and click on ‘Update on the web’, this may take up to 45 minutes or an hour depending on your internet speed. This process is quite similar to when you connect your device to the Desktop manager and then click ‘Update’ from the Device drop down button.
2) From your device (Over the air) :
Requirements: Active internet on your device. (You may also use Wi-Fi if its available)
You can update your BlackBerry smartphone over-the-air (OTA) without connecting to a computer. To do this, select the Options icon from the Home screen. Choose Device, then Software Updates and follow the instructions. This process takes the longest time (IMO) and while you’re at it you won’t be able to use your phone, in fact the last time i tried it, it took me over 36 hours to complete the update, but it is a very safe way to update your smartphone to a harmless OS. Also, if you have the latest software already, this process, after checking for an update will display that “Your BlackBerry is up to date”.
3) Locally from a Desktop Manager (DM) AKA Offline Upgrade:
Requirements: a PC with Blackberry Desktop Manager installed on it, a Blackberry USB cable.
This process works very well for those who want to install unofficial BlackBerry OSes, as earlier mentioned, this may be harmful to your device.
For this process, you’ll need to install the latest version of the Blackberry Desktop Manager (download here). Next, you’ll have to download the OS and install it manually on your PC before installing it on your smartphone. You can download it from BlackBerry’s website or from any of these other sites like N4BB, Crackberry, BBOS, etc on your PC or Blackberry smartphone.
After you’ve installed the unofficial OS, you have to delete the vendor.xml. This is very important because your DM may not be able to detect the new OS unless you delete the Vendor file. *you can use this file to delete all vendor files on your PC or you can manually delete the vendor.xml file by navigating to your C: Drive/Program Files/Common Files/Research In Motion/AppLoader here you will see the Vendor file, delete it, or you can open your C:/ drive and run a search for vendor.xml as shown in the picture and delete it.
Then launch you Blackberry Desktop Manager with your device plugged in, wait for the Desktop Manager to detect the newly installed OS, then click ‘Update’ when it shows this.
Make sure you tick the ‘Backup device data’ check-box so as to back up your data before the upgrade and restore it after the OS upgrade is done.
Alternatively you can just plug in your phone to your PC which should be connected to the internet, launch the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and then wait for it to search online for a device update, if there’s an available update it will prompt you and you’ll have the choice to upgrade your OS immediately or at a later time. But you must stay connected throughout the upgrade process.
*Important things to note*
> Do not for any reason disconnect your device while the upgrade process is going on, this may render your Blackberry unusable.
> Make sure that your PC is fully charged before starting the upgrade process.
> If you must do the upgrade ‘on the web’, make sure you have enough Data (minimum 300MB).
> Make sure you back up all your stuff before the update so as not to lose anything.
> You may have to download or re-enter your user name and password for some 3rd party applications and setup your email again after the upgrade process is done.
> If for any reason you couldn’t complete the process, please send us an email @ firstname.lastname@example.org or you can ask for our BB PIN on twitter @fathomberry*.
